Dining speakeasy 's

The Dining section of the NY Times has an article today about restaurants not located in traditional venues, ie they're located in someone's house. The article mentions Sara Newberry, a cookbook editor who lives in Prospect Heights, and sometimes has 10 friends over for dinner who each pay $40-50 bucks for her and her friends to cook.

Very similar to Coach Peaches, the original Fort Greene speakeasy we wrote about over 3 years ago.

Barrette on Vanderbilt has a deal for Restaurant Week

According to Time Out NY, Barrette has a $25 special:

Red Hook’s Sixpoint Craft Ales is teaming with Clinton Hill’s Brown Betty Cafe to cook up a—beat this—$25 four-course meal with beer pairings and burlesque show on Thursday 17 at Prospect Heights’ pastie-twirling watering hole Barrette. Highlights include watercress and grilled-peach salad with Righteous Rye ale, shrimp-and-corn bisque with Sweet Action Ale (one of the 100 Best Things we tasted last year) and a performance from Naughtia Nice (pictured), the first-ever Miss Sweet Action. Betcha won’t see that at Eleven Madison Park. R.S.V.P. to 917-378-2454

Union Market - fraud alert

Via racked, we learn from Gotham City Insider that one of Union Market's trucks was caught double-parked next to Rossman's Fruits in the very unsexy environs of 26th Street and 3rd Avenue in Sunset Park.

I hope Union Market issues a rebuttal soon, or their business is about to take a hit from this consumer..

Greene Grape strikes back on prices

In response to the question regarding their prices, a Greene Grape owner has responded:

"The best deal no one really knows about is that any unsold pastries are 1/2
off after 8pm until we close at 9.
...
I know some fish prices off-hand and we have Tilapia at $10.99 a pound and Arctic Char at $12.99 a pound. Fresh baguettes (delivered daily) are $1.99. We do not yet have our cheese, charcuterie, dairy, fresh produce or chilled beverage cases but they're coming in the next couple of weeks!"

The signage is up for Greene Grape Provisions at the corner of South Portland and Fulton in Fort Greene. Does anyone know when the store opens and whether there will be a butcher onsite?

Cafe Lafayette on the brink?

The picture that this Brooklyn Eagle article paints is not pretty. Nadir Khelifi purchased the restaurant in 2005 after it was named one of the top-10 dirtiest restaurants in the city. Business suffered, so Khelifi did what any enterprising restaurateur would do - he plans on closing it down and rebranding it as a tapas restaurant, much like his other restaurant at the old Liquors space on Dekalb and Adelphi.

Week 1 of the Prospect Heights CSA

Here's the bounty from the first week of the Prospect Heights CSA. The missus complained about the small amount of food for the money, but that was before she found out that the farmer, Windflower Farms, lost a lot of the crops in a hailstorm.

One herb plant is unidentifiable while the other is a dill/parsley plant. There was also romaine lettuce, some beets, scallions and a pint of strawberries.
